Our Hope Is in Our God: Praying for Our Nation PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 October 2008

Election Day is approaching, and there is much at stake.  In many ways, the future of our nation hangs in the balance.  New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation (NYFRF) in no way believes that one's salvation could ever come through right legislation. Eternal salvation comes through faith alone, in Christ alone (Jn. 14:6, Eph. 2:8-9).

ImageIt is NYFRF’s position that we do not place our hope in getting the right people elected to office, or in the defeat of legislation that contradicts the clear teaching of God’s Word.  We place our hope in our God and in a salvation attained through Jesus Christ's finished work on the Cross of Calvary.

We recognize that the Church has historically fulfilled a vital, even a prophetic role in speaking on the moral issues of its day.

NYFRF believes that the Church, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, is a preserving and restraining influence on the culture, whose bent is not toward God (2 Thess. 2:6-7).  Our mission is to motivate the Church to live up to its calling as salt and light (Matt. 5:13-16) and be the voice that declares “Thus saith the Lord”, concerning the vital moral issues of our day.

NYFRF encourages all concerned Christians to devote themselves to focused prayer for the election, New York state, and America.  NYFRF suggests the following prayer points listed below, but also available at www.ivotevalues.org.

Pray for the Election

  • Pray that God's people would feel the need to engage the culture and be involved in government, just as Jesus taught (Matt. 5:13-16).
  • Pray that all Christians in America will register to vote for the Election (Matt. 22:21).
  • Pray that God would help all Americans realize that where the candidates stand on key issues is more important than the party to which he or she belongs or all the campaign rhetoric.
  • Pray that Americans of faith would learn the truth about every candidate’s position on important issues.
  • Pray that God would make the choice between candidates clear, as voters weigh these candidates and their positions on biblical values (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • Pray that Americans of faith will vote their values instead of their political party or pocketbook (2 Chronicles 19:2).
  • Pray that the Lord would protect the election process, both nationally and locally, from dishonesty and fraud (Proverbs 20:23).
  • Pray that God would give America godly men and women who fear the Lord and honor Him as leaders (Proverbs 29:2).
  • Pray that God would give America leaders who value the fact that America is a beacon of hope and freedom for the entire world and the understanding that our nation must be defended (Proverbs 8:15-16).
  • Pray that God will bless your efforts to engage our culture and claim it for Christ, beginning with your vote.  Remember, how you vote today determines tomorrow.

Pray for Our Nation

  • Pray for government officials (1Timothy 2:1-2), specifically for the President and Vice President, the Cabinet, the Congress, the Supreme Court and the Judges, state leaders and those who serve as local officials.
  • Pray that all leaders would come to know Christ and follow Him (1Timothy 2:3-4).
  • Pray that God would give leaders wisdom and discernment as they govern (Psalm 72:1; Proverbs 21:1).
  • Pray that God will release those taken captive by Satan and give sight to those who have been spiritually blinded (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).
  • Ask Him to bring revival to the hearts and lives of the saved (2 Chronicles 7:14).
  • Ask God to soften all hearts and make them open to the Lord (Ezekiel 36:36).
  • Pray that the innocent, the oppressed, and those unjustly treated would be rescued and protected (Proverbs 24:11).
  • Pray for policies that respect human life, the sacredness of marriage, the right to religious freedom, compassionate care for the needy and responsible care for the environment (Proverbs 29:2).

Remember the prescription God gave: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14

One’s faithful prayers will inevitably lead to action.  As James stated, faith without works is really no faith at all.  In other words, we are saved by faith alone, but a faith that saves is never alone.  It involves action.

Following Jesus’ teaching on the Christian’s role as salt and light (Matt. 5:13-16) and our civic obligation (Matt. 22:21) has direct application to the culture and the realm of government.  Our prayers and concerns for our nation should lead us to participate in government and engage the culture as often as possible.  That participation includes registering to vote, encouraging others to do the same, and voting your values.  Remember, how you vote today impacts tomorrow!
