Brooks Seeks Gay Marriage Appeal PDF Print E-mail
ImageCounty Executive Maggie Brooks used Friday, February 22, 2008 to announce Monroe County’s decision to file a motion to appeal the recent ruling of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division that same-sex marriages performed in other states or nations must be recognized in New York State.

The ruling in Martinez v. County of Monroe was a result of a recent case against Monroe Community College by an employee seeking medical benefits for her same-sex partner. The couple took part in a civil union ceremony in Vermont and later married in Ontario, Canada, where same-sex marriages are legally recognized. The couple demanded that their foreign marriage be recognized in New York State and that they receive medical benefits from the College.
